Barcelona has a lot to offer at this time of the year. The old buildings, narrow streets of the old town and the friendly atmosphere make it a great winter destination. The cities many squares are beautifully lit and filled with varios markets.
The most well-known and classic market is Fira de Santa Llúcia Christmas Market. Dating from 1786, the Fira de Santa Llucia is a Christmas fair held between the 1st and the 23rd of December outside Barcelona Cathedral in the Gothic area of the city. Around 300 market stalls sell seasonal goodies, while nativity scenes, musical parades and exhibitions add to the fun. The market is very Spanish. There is no sight of mulled wine or bratwurst and the market certainly does not have the typically German feel that many christmas markets tend to have. In the evenings, when the lights from the market lit up the square and the beautiful cathedral, Fira de Santa Llúcia Christmas Market is definitely worth paying a vist, even if you have no purchases to make.
Another famous market in Barcelona is Fira de Nadal a la Sagrada Familia. The market runs around the famous cathedral which makes it more spread out than the Fira de Santa Llucia. It has similar products on offer but it does not have quite the same atmosphere. However, the Sagrada Familia itself it a must-see during a Barcelona visit, then why not see the amazing Gaudí designed building and the market in one trip.
