A museum of contemporary and modern art located on the Nervion River in Bilbao, the Guggenheim is world renowned for its aesthetic uniqueness and exhibits. It was designed by Frank Gehry in the early 90´s, built by the huge multinational Spanish company Ferrovial and opened to the public in ´97, with a huge amount of public success and critical acclaim.
The strange exterior won the comment “the greatest building of our time” by architect Philip Johnson, perhaps due to its eccentric nature, as the wild curves are designed to be random and to “catch the light”. Being a landmark and design of moderntimes, the building is innovative because it relied heavily on Computer Aided 3D design in its proceedings, making things possible that architects of the past would have found intensly difficult.
In terms of exhibitions, two words come to mind: variations and multinationality. Exhibitions in the Guggenheim change frequently, with thematic displays being commonplace. Adversly, permanent art collections are numerous in the Guggenheim, with 20th century abstract and non-objective art bing prevalent.
