3465654957 46cc7cedc5 Sardana Stamp Your Feet Catalonian StyleWhile most of us associate the words ¨Spain¨ and ¨dance¨ with a fancy red gown and flowers in the hair, the region of Catalonia has to offer something more than the well-known flamenco. This something is called The Sardana – a circle dance, born with Catalonia itself, which can still be seen at streets and squares around the region and everyone is welcome to join.

If you have been to the Balkans and are familiar with the traditional dances over there, you will be quite surprised to see the similarities with Sardana. Gathering in circles, stamping feet while holding hands seem to be a favourite thing for the south nations in Europe, especially when it is accompanied by some nice music.

The cobla is the band responsible for the Sardana music. It features ten wind instruments, a double bass and a tambori. The flabiol, the tenora and the tible are some of the woodwind instruments and, along with the tambori, are typical in these altitudes. Surprisingly or not, the cobla consists of eleven musicians. I can immediately think of some other teams of that number around here and the fascination their art brings us all.  So, the only conclusion that can be made having this fact is: bring eleven Catalan´s together and let them play! The result is always quite enjoyable.

The Sardana consists of two parts, or tiradas (like in opera), with different tempos. Generally, the dance is a slow, non-performance one, and can be danced by literally anybody, as it does not require any special skills. But of course, as anything that we associate with the words ¨Spain¨and ¨dance¨, it requires a big dose of positivity, a smile, and love. So the next time you are walking around Barcelona and you see people forming circles in the streets, do not think twice – just grab somebody´s hand and be a part of this wonderful Catalan tradition.
